On Putin’s secret billions

I’m not a fan of Russia Insider, but here is a very detailed article on the history of rumors of Putin’s secret wealth…and why the rumors are not true.

  1. Alexander Mercouris is actually one of my favorite Russia analysts. I’ve always found him to be intelligent and sober. The fact that he’s an expert on international law is good, too.

    • I love reading Mercouris’s work as well. It is quite interesting that an analyst as cerebral as Mercouris would be writing for Russia Insider, which tends to go for more emotional analysis of Russia and media criticism in general.

  2. I read the article, but I found the author more interesting than the content of the article itself.

“A barrister has been struck off after falsely claiming one of Britain’s most senior judges had him kidnapped and blackmailed him into dropping a £1 million claim on behalf of a client.”
“Alexander Mercouris concocted a web of “tortuous deceit” to convince a client he was pursuing the bogus claim, including forging a Supreme Court judge’s signature, a tribunal heard.”

RI claim on their about page that Western media are controlled “by a few corporations and interest groups”.

Interesting thing though, when I look at the A. Mercouris user page http://russia-insider.com/en/users/alexander-mercouris there is no mention of his bizarre and “profoundly dishonest” (his own words) behavior while he was still a barrister. His RI page simply states that he “worked for 12 years in the Royal Courts of Justice in London as a lawyer, specializing in human rights and constitutional law.”

    Curiouser and curiouser!
